----------------------------------------------
Section 1: Glen Ballard (Alanis' brother) is on a 4-string
1st verse:
V1 V2 V1 V2
I... recommend getting your heart trampled on to anyone
V1 V2 V1 V2
I... recommend walking around naked in your living room
T1 T2
Swallow it down (what a jagged little pill)
T1 T2
It feels so good (swimming in your stomach)
T1 T3
Wait until the dust settles

Chorus:
C1 C2
You live, you learn; you love, you learn
C3 C4
You cry, you learn; you lose, you learn
C1 C2 C3 C4
You bleed, you learn; you scream, you learn

2nd verse:
V1 V2 V1
I... recommend biting off more than you can chew to anyone
V2
I certainly do
V1 V2 V1
I... recommend sticking your foot in your mouth at any time
V2
Feel free
T1 T2
Throw it down (the caution blocks you from the wind)
T1 T2
Hold it up (to the rays)
T1 T3
You wait and see when the smoke clears

--chorus--

--Break--
X1-6 times X2-measures

3rd verse (2nd part):
T1 T2
Wear it out (the way a three-year-old would do)
T1 T2
Melt it down (you're gonna have to eventually anyway)
T1 T3
The fire trucks are coming up around the bend

--chorus--

Added to chorus, same riffs:
You grieve, you learn; you choke, you learn
You laugh, you learn; you choose, you learn
You pray, you learn; you ask, you learn
You live, you learn...

How to Read Bass Tab: A Beginner's Guide

1. Understanding the Basics

a. Strings:

Bass tab consists of horizontal lines representing the strings of the bass guitar. The lowest-pitched string (usually the E string) is at the bottom, and the highest-pitched string (usually the G string) is at the top.

b. Numbers:

Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to play on a specific string. For example, if you see "3" on the E string, it means you should press down the third fret on the lowest string.

2. Reading Bass Tab Example

In this tab:

  • Play the note on the 1st fret of the E string.
  • Play the open E string.
  • Play the 3rd fret on the A string.
  • Play the 1st fret on the A string.
        G|-----------------|
        D|-----------------|
        A|---------3-------|
        E|---1-1---1---3---|

3. Playing Techniques

a. Hammer-ons and Pull-offs:

Hammer-ons are represented by an "h" (e.g., 5h7 means play the 5th fret and hammer onto the 7th fret). Pull-offs are represented by a "p" (e.g., 7p5 means play the 7th fret and pull off to the 5th fret).

b. Slides:

Slides are often indicated by an "/" or "\\" between two numbers (e.g., 5/7 means slide from the 5th fret to the 7th fret).
